Requirements for the Sociology Major

Effective Fall Quarter 2012

Presociology Major: Only students with less than 90 units completed (excluding AP) may declare the Presociology major once they complete either Sociology 1 or 20 with a grade of C or better.

I. Preparation for the Major: The student who wishes to become a Sociology major must complete the three preparatory courses listed below by the end of the Fall Quarter of their third year. All of these courses must be taken for a letter grade. A minimum grade of C or better is required in each of the preparatory courses. Students with a grade point average below 2.5 in the preparation coursework are not eligible for admission to the major. Students who repeat any preparation course more than once are automatically denied admission to the major.

• Sociology 1 (Introductory Sociology)

• One Statistics course chosen from:

  • Political Science 6
  • Statistics 10 (Introduction to Statistical Reasoning)
  • Statistics 11 (Introduction to Statistical Methods for Business and Economics)
  • Statistics 13 (Introduction to Statistical Methods for Life and Health Sciences)

• Sociology 20 (Introduction to Sociological Research Methods)

II. Requirements for the Major: The major in sociology requires 11 upper division courses. At least six of the upper division sociology courses must be taken in residence at UCLA (theory, core, 1 elective). Students are urged to complete Sociology 101, 102 and the "Core" courses as early as possible and before taking other upper-division courses. Soc 101 and 102 must be completed with a grade of C or better. Students are required to maintain a 2.0 overall GPA average in all upper-division sociology courses. Pass/Not Pass grading is not acceptable.

• Two theory courses:

  • Sociology 101 (Development of Sociological Theory)
  • Sociology 102 (Contemporary Sociological Theory)

• One statistical methods course:

  • Sociology 113 (Statistical and Computer Methods for Social Research) OR
  • Statistics 112 (Statistical Methods for Social Sciences)

• Three Core courses, one course from each of the following Core areas:

  • Interactions (Soc 111, M124A, CM125, 128, 130, 132-134, 145)
  • Institutions and Social Processes (Soc 116, 117, 143, 158, 168-171, 173, M174, M175, M176, 181B)
  • Power and Inequality (Soc 154, 156, 157, M161, M162, M163, M165, 181A, 182, 183, 185)

• Five additional upper division sociology courses
