I analyze diverse expressions of organized crime and social violence in the North America region. My current research uses computational methods such as machine learning for crime forecasting, and social network analysis to understand criminal networks.

Irene Del Mastro N.
Irene is currently studying the relationship between the medical training in the US and the ways in which medical students take actions against health inequities related to race, gender, and sexuality. Irene earned a B.A. in Sociology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and a M.A. in Gender and Women’s studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Internal grants from both institutions and a fellowship from the Fogarty Institute facilitated her previous research, which explores how class, gender, and ethnicity shape the experiences of teen pregnancy and home birth in Perú.

Kristella Montiegel
My research focuses on the socialization and communication practices of deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children in a spoken-language preschool classroom. I use a combination of ethnographic interviews and Conversation Analysis to examine the ways in which DHH children, educators, and parents understand and reinforce certain ideological beliefs and attitudes about spoken language and its use in social life.
